They are quite different. The type 1 has the flange holes threaded while the 
type 3 is not. The insertion length is also different.

I rebuild them and can rebuild yours for a bit more than the price of a beetle 
one, as long as you have an original ATe MC. The rebuilt one is likely to be 
of better quality than the "new" one you could buy, and is certain to fit 
without difficulty, which is less than you can say about the one you may buy 
new.

Plus it is more economical and ecological.
