being unclear earlier.  Think its just a simple VW thing also that keeps the
oil from splashing up the tube.

The dipstick does bottom out, that's why there's a spring in the shaft. I've
always taken that rubber piece to be just a bumper to keep the stick from
rattling in the tube. Mine's loose, too, but not loose enough to fall to the
bottom.
