The later clock has a transistor, a couple of resistors and two coils (is
there a diode too?).  The transistor is on and energises one coil to pull
the (magnetised?) pendulum across, which induces a voltage in the other coil
opposing the emitter bias, switching off the transistor and the attracting
coil.  The pendulum then swings back again to repeat the process.  It's just
an electromagnetic impulse to keep the pendulum going.  The pendulum
movement operates an escapement and gearing to the seconds shaft and hence
minutes and hours.  (Errors and omissions excepted - I've not looked inside
one for many years).
I've a schematic somewhere but not in the most obvious places 'cos I've
looked there!
