<x-flowed>As a couple of other people have pointed out it could be one of many things. Personally I would jack the front of the car completely off the ground, put it on some jack stands, and start wiggling everything to see whats loose. Check everything, see if there is axial play in the wheel bearings. Check to see if there are any loose bolts anywhere. Check the tie rods, and check all the ball joints. The steering dampener would likely be easiest to check if its out of the car, or at least unbolt one end to see if there is still resistance when you try to move it.
