<x-charset iso-8859-1>As far as the race inspired merged collectors discussed on Shoptalkforums, we finally got our hands on "Racer Chris" Foley's awesome equal length "super header" (http://www.tangerineracing.com/prod01.htm). I know he doesn’t make anything for the type 3, but it is still an impressive piece nonetheless. He was kind enough to work with us to make us one custom fit for a type 4 motor (his stuff was originally for 914s -- little orientation change) and even more importantly, so it would clear our custom mounts, air bellow, etc for the type 3 into which the type 4 and header were going into. He's also working with Jake Raby of Aircooled Technology on making a custom header for type 4 upright conversions so that you don’t have to chop up the body or do custom (hammer and tin snips) clearancing. Just to let you know, his work was spectacular- his stainless steel welds were the best I have ever seen, and quality is first rate- he really loves doing this stuff and it shows. Even better, the exhaust just slipped in, cleared everything, and even his additional bracket he made for us to support the muffler fit absolutely perfectly without modifications. If only there were more vendors out there as willing as Tangerine Racing, among many others, to cater to our needs and support innovation and invention in our hobby. Found a long thread on headers at Shop Talk Forums. All the details and considerations that go into the design of a merged header. Interesting read. Geared towards the Type 4 engine. http://shoptalkforums.com/bbs/NonCGI/Forum1/HTML/002013.html Still didn't answer my question: Just what is the difference between a merged header and an extractor exhaust? The exhaust I have has equal length tubing and a 4 to 1 collector. It is a rather abrupt merge of tubing compared with some pictures I found that have nicely welded long conical merges. Obviously, mine is cheap and doesn't offer the performance gains of a race designed exhaust system, but it seems to handle the stock engine nicely. I'm exhausted. derek ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org </x-charset>
