It woujld have 2 terminals on it and should have just one wire connected to each: One goes to the hot terminal of the coil via an in-line fuse, while the other goes forward to the AT. Sounds like you may well have a bunch of messed up wiring. I'd concentrate on figuring all your wires out first.
