I finally gained the courage to pull the fenders off of SpongeBob (the kids named him...)this past weekend. I was happy to find minimal rust - except for where the seam sealer was applied to the inner rear quarter panels. It's all dried and cracked, with rust underneath. What is more concerning to me is the surface rust that has formed inside those cooling air boxes. How the hell am I going to get in there to clean and POR15 these areas? Or is there another, more effective way to control this corrosion? One other thing I did was pull the A/C box from under the dashboard and then removed the fresh air box. Just like I've read in other posts, my box was filled with leaves, pine needles and dirt. The drain pipes were totally clogged with dirt. It amazing any water drained out. I clean this area out by having my daughter hold a tupperware container up to the hole under the dash while I pressure washed the air box from above. Messy but effective! Unfortunately, the inside of the fresh air intake is also rusty. Any thoughts on how to properly treat this area as well? Some other questions: The Bentley manual indicates that when installing the front fenders, to use D19 tape on the hinge pillar. Is this stuff even available anymore, and if so where would I get this from? The black, tar-like undercoating...how do I get this off without damaging the paint underneath? If there is no way to effectively get this off, will it hurt anything to re-coat over the old? As always, TIA.
