Before trying to align anything, make sure the tie rods and the rest of the front suspension components are in good shape.  Adjust toe-in with the tie rods.  Your Type 3 has two sets of ball joints: upper and lower.  The stems on the ball joint tops should have little notches cut into them.  On one pair of joints (top or lower -- somebody remind me which..) the notch must be oriented to point straight ahead.  Then, adjust camber with the other pair of ball joints.  Caster on the front wheels is not adjustable, but caster should fall into the correct range if the other adjustments are made correctly.  See the Bentley manual.  Your typical alignment shop will not do the procedure correctly without your help. 

But if you have a lowered car, your caster will not ever set correctly.
