Is your fuel pump operating smoothly and consistently?

How does the inside of your fuel tank look? When you have run the tank down to near empty, remove the fuel level sender and shine a light inside. Crusty? Drain the tank and look at the wire "sock" filter inside the tank. Clogged up and crusty?

Run through all of the basic ignition system checks as illustrated in Bentley. For backfire, look at valve adjustment, timing, points, ... You say the car had a tune-up recently. Did you do it yourself or a shop? A shop probably did it wrong, especially if your 72 is stock.
