Hi all, All's well that ends well. What actually happened is that I broke off the electrical contact. If I want to be generous with myself I can say that it was brittle with age. Anyway, I tried the type 1 unit and it does work, but it shows about 1/4 of a tank less than the type 3 unit. (Thanks to Michael Harrison for telling me this would happen. You were dead right.). I suppose at a pinch these could be used by people with no other alternative. What I actually did in the end was to solder a little piece of wire with a connector on the end onto the stump of where it broke off, and plug the wire from the gauge into that. It now works again. I must say I hated working around the open petrol tank. I had visions of sacrificing my life for the type 3 cause, and wasn't particularly eager to do so. Obviously I didn't use the soldering iron anywhere near the tank, but even so . . . . One problem I had was that I didn't actually know how much petrol the car had in the tank, and I didn't believe the fuel gauge when it said nearly full. Anyway, when I took out the fuel sender I realised it had be right all along.
