I think that you may find that you can just barely feel the normal free play. I find that I never have to change shims, even when rebuilding an engine. They are not wear items, they are there to compensate for tolerance buildup between the flywheel, crank, and #1 main bearing flange. If you suspect your end play has changed, you should start by measuring it, to make sure of what you suspect. If it is drastically out of spec, you have a problem that will at least require removing the engine. It could be a loose flywheel, but if it is large, the #1 main bearing has probably come loose in the case and this requires a rebuild and align bore to fix. It should be fixed before something goes drastically wrong and expensive parts are destroyed. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
