[T3] engine rebuild priorities (a little long, but i need help!)

archives didn't seem to be working so:

i'm biting the bullet and i'm going for a new rebuild on my 8-year-old GEX
engine which got over 100,000 miles. i'm trying to decide if i should go
with a local guy or order GEX again. I'm sure many will tell horror stories
of GEX engines, but i can't argue with the money it saves.

here's the engine i want to build and put in my '67 square. can you give me
opinions on what you think about the overall package?
-------------------------
1776 cc (i know, i'm darkside)
new case
full flow machining for oil filter
CB Cheater cam (274 degrees adv. duration)
all spinning and moving parts balanced at a local place
double thrust cam bearings
CB 044 heads so that i can put bigger carbs on later if i want to (40 x 35.5
valves)
stock carbs
stock oil pump
my old oil cooler and all other "outside" parts
-------------------------
my local guy will charge me $1,750 for all that if i tear the engine down
myself and do the assembly past longblock stage and put the engine in my
car. is that a good deal?

i can get that same (pretty much) engine for about $1,464 (+$100 s&h) from
GEX (see bottom for specs).

other questions about above:

i might not continue to use my current plate cooler b/c as per Gene Berg
advice that they don't help at all, is toby around for any thoughts on that?

probably have to change the main jet on the stock carbs, right?

gene berg says stock oil pump is better than all the new "high volume" ones,
right?

just clean my oil cooler out real good, right?

is it worth it to try to cut and weld my engine tin to use the bigger Type 4
oil cooler?

will the 044 heads put the spark plug in a position that will be too hard to
access?

what's the word on hydraulic lifters? there's the bernie bergmann chevy(?)
style ones and then the ones that just fit the stock size bores. is one
better than the other and is either worth it. i love the thought of not
having to adjust valves.

thanks for your help,
