[T3] engine diagnosis


<x-charset iso-8859-1>I know everyone in the group likes to hear about the results of an engine
rebuild - here's what I found in mine this week.

The case is a '67 original VW, with evidence of only slight previous
machining.  The case did not need an align bore.  The crank and main
bearings looked great, no excessive end-play on the rods, but something
interesting about the cam:  The fourth lobe was worn flat (yes, flat...
there was no rounded end) and hence, the cam followers for that lobe were
noticeably scratched.  Coincidentally, this is also the lobe that effected
cyl #4 (remember, I recently cracked a ring, and the cylinder went dead).
Things that make you go hmmm.

The heads were in really good shape - but the cam followers were recently
replaced with Brazilian units(probably not changed at the same time as the
cam).  The push rods were all fine, and the studs had been replaced with
case savers (inserts).  There was a "2" stamped on the top - I must assume a
.020 grind on the case at some point.

The engine has been overly carbureted for quite some time (it's a stock 1600
with Dual 40's), but as you may remember, I changed the carbs back to stock
32 PDSITs very recently.  Oh yeah, the flywheel only had two shims, and the
oil pump was a high-volume Brazilian unit (scratched to hell).

Anyway... I have the case at the shop right now being spec'd out with new
crank bearings and all.  They will also check the crank endplay and verify
the align bore is okay.  I should get the case back in a day or two, and
then it's back to my garage for some paint and reassembly.  While the engine
was out, I'm taking the time to clean the firewall and inside of the engine
compartment - I will be repainting and all.  It should look great.  I'll
post some pics when done.

I'm putting in new rods, cylinders, pistons, bearings, gaskets, rod inserts,
etc. Basically an entire rebuild including machining (how often do we take
time to do that?)
