Long studs vs. short studs securing the rocker shafts to the heads. On
the early engines with long studs the valve clearance decreases as the
engine warms up, with the short studs the clearance increases. The
switch was made early in the 1965 model year, sometime in August or
September 1964.

According to Elfrink the clearances on the early engines were increased
from .008 to .012 at the introduction of the S to help prevent burnt
valves.
