Subject: Mofoco heads

Hi Leon,

I am looking at some Mofoco heads for my FI system.... I was wondering how
yours turned out??

I am building a 2 liter with the "D" FI system using the 914 Porsche 2 liter

system. It will be 90.5mm with a 78.4mm crank, with 7.5 comp. Just want
more guts... and do not like the new VW heads.

Thanks, Pat

Answering your question with my usual super long litany:

I was told by the maker that these heads are
far superior to any other brand even factory :
better casting and machining also
superior alloy 1973 formulation from Germany,
casted in a aircraft alumuminum casting patrs
facility in New York. Extra fins everywhere
on these heads.

 Casting and design
is outstanding but I had problems with
other things that I mention below. You must
be on your feet and be a pain in the butt,
do not take whatever they give you. Get
the best you and your car deserves for
the money you give them.

I called them after sending my e-mail and
apologized and were willing to rectify
everything at no cost to me. So I sent one
head back , which was the worst of the two.
The pictures in their site are deceiving,
they show the New brazilian heads with
the casted and machined EFI boss and ,
they were not aware of this .

I think I will be satisfied at the end, I
am planning to put a temp sensor on each
head, to minitor both sides, when I am
zooming down the freeway at 90+ mph during
 graveyard hours.

I will let you know what the final outcome
is when my engine is running again.

new engine specs :
-1600 efi
-8 to 1 compression I hope
-total seal second rings
-balanced forgrd crank
-Mofoco 041 heads with 3/4 inch reach
-one peice valves
-SNIEDER TORQUEY BUS CAM (Mo low end power)
-26 mm oil pump
-2 quart sump
-pressure booster kit (yeah I know)
-Slip in hydraulic lifters
-92 pass mesa cooler with fan and
 oil filter
-Swivel rocker adjusters
-dual quiet pack ( will get kitco hidden ceramic ones later)
-all seams on case sealed in epoxy (experimenting for zero oil leaks)
-silicon pushrod tube seals ( my rubber ones got hard and craked after
50,000 miles (less than two years time)
- will continue with the synthetic oil
- 50,000 volt/high current coil
-pertronix igniton (will add capacitive discharge later.
-Ngk thin electrode palladium spark plugs (like in aeroplanes)
All I need is a jusdson supercharger to blow air into the
intake (I am just dreaming)

I hope this time my cam gear does not self destruct.
Engine was in perfect running and could have run another 50k
or 100k according to the internal wear and oil pressure
indicated.

Read my e-mail below to Mofoco.

Dear Mofoco Customer service,

I just wish to remind you that the 041 head your welding the EFI sensor boss
on is a 3/4 inch reach plug. This just in case you use another head for this

weld job. Order processed 30 Aug 2001 .

Dear Mofoco Customer service,

This is not meant as a bash but constructive critisism
so you will know my problem with the heads and
satisfy me , I do not want money back, just good heads.

My cylinder heads arrived today. I am somewhat
unsatisfied with these. I was told that the quality
of these heads were better than anything out there,
especially the Brazilian, Mexican and Spanish ones.
I assume MADE IN USA is supposed to be the best but...
you can prove that by making this customer happier.
I have heard other people's complaints even though
you have not heard personally, I guess they thought
the bought them so then they might as well use them,
no use telling the maker...

I am Leon Martinez, I have been the one calling over
and over to check the status of my 041 heads with the
3/4 inch plug depth and machined EFI sensor boss. I have
made it clear at every phone call that I wanted the
Fuel Injection boss machined, I was told that tapping
the boss would cost an additional 10.00 dollars, I agreed
to have one head machined at this boss.

I was told by you over and over that this would be done.
Originally , during the first phone call I asked alot of
questiones about the construction and design of the head.
Among other things, I asked if the EFI boss existed
on your 041 heads like the 042 heads. You told me that
you went to the shelf to verify this and in fact the boss
was there ready to machine. The picture on your site did
not reflect this but I was told that was an old picture
that needed updating and that a newer one would have the
machined boss.

The heads that you gave me ???

They do not even have bosses to machine, the casting is
obviously different from the one you saw. I cannot
use this matched pair, if the EFI boss is not there, I
have Electronic fuel injection in my car, I made that clear.

I have minor complaints about the quality of the machining
even though the casting is outstanding (except for some
cast flashing that partially plugged some areas, this is
easily correctable).

- There is machine flashing everywhere, the machining
was not finished by deburring, Many sharp areas.
I must finish the job with a dremmil tool.

- driling of the head bolt holes are of low quality,
kind of crooked at the begining but straigtens out.
It is acceptable though. Hoping the bolt does not end up
tweeked.

- machining of one of the internal headbolt bosses with the
lip (under the cover)the lip is almost machined off
and what is left is a razor sharp crooked piece of burr
where the lip was. This maybe acceptable as long as the washer
is centered.

- Some head bolt washer bosses are machined offset from the
head bolt holes. This may be acceptable if the offset washer
does not tweek the bolts.

- The bale wire cover bosses are not drilled evenly, one is a
bit forward and the other back . I do not know how strong the
one drilled forward is since there is less metal left for the
tension of the headcover clamp. This maybe acceptable if it is
strong.

- I do not know if this is by design but the intake holes are
full of machine flashing and/or made smaller than other brand
stock heads with stock valves. I can fix this with a dremmil
tool.

This is just constructive critisism, i do not wish you to feel
bad. I took these heads to a machine shop to verify that
the machining did not reach the quality of the Brazilian,
Mexican and Spanish heads. I hope you can correct this for future
customers. The machine quality of the Brazilian(and others) heads for
example
is of supurb quality in comparison to yours, it is straight and
clean. What the Brazilian and others are lacking, is clearly
the better casting you have.

I am concerned because I am an American that beleives that
American quality should kick some serious butt no matter who
they should be especially at the place like Milwaukee, where
machine creation is tops.

I am the coordinator of a TYPE 3 club that has 40 cars/members and I
am in ocassional contact with magazine comentators, editors,
VW webmasters, sometimes I info other clubs wich make up hundreds of
cars during gatherings. I have told many people that I was looking for
heads without machine problems of the Brazilian heads (only REAL off
angle plug holes, would not seat flat, got three heads like this),or
heads that did not melt easily (inferior metal of AMC of Spain) or
the difficulty of getting universal dualport heads from the VW factory
with the VW logo casted (Mexican heads, I have just now found two easy
sources for these ), or heads that would not overheat immediately
(all racing heads of all brands with thicker but a lame amount of
fins).

I am the torture tester of cars for my VW club. I have driven 90 mph
routinely for an hour each day at 5:00 am while going to work, I have
broken balanced cranks of American brand detroit big blocks (Chev etc...)
I always look for the best, I told everyone you may be the best and that
I would test you next, I do not wish to tell everyone what I found but
I wish to tell everyone that I was satified with Mofoco products
and that my heads turned out as bullet proof, and cooled better
as expected , slight machine problems are of no concern to me but
are for comment. I like your casting very much but were is the BOSS ?

To satify me please contact me with a fix, all I wanted was a
pair of the same heads with one of the EFI bosses machined,
the ones you sent me do not even have the bosses casted in them.
All I need is a one 041 head with the boss casted and machined
with 3/4 inch reach sparkplug holes.
