Re: T3 plating

<x-charset iso-8859-1>Here it is, the 1961 Notchback chrome system extract:-

"Item 2. DOOR HANDLE AND BUTTON
These components were made from zinc base die castings and were plated with
a copper-nickel-chromium system on the outer surfaces and a copper-nickel
system on the inner surfaces.
Coating thicknesses on the outer surface of the handle were as follows
               Maximum Minimum Average range
 Copper 0.0024 in. 0.00095 in. 0.0010 - 0.0014 in.
 Nickel 0.0039 in. 0.00125 in. 0.0015 - 0.0020 in.
 Chromium 0.00010 in. 0.00002 in. 0.00004 - 0.00006 in.

Coating thicknesses on the outer surface of the button were as follows:
               Maximum Minimum Average range
 Copper 0.0009 in. 0.0003 in. 0.0005 - 0.0006 in
 Nickel 0.0047 in. 0.0005 in. 0.0018 - 0.0023 in.
 Chromium 0.00005 in. 0.00002 in. 0.00002-0.00004 in.

Item 3. OVERRIDER

This component was made from a low-carbon steel and was plated with a
copper-nickel-chromium system on the outer surface and had a thin layer of
copper and a flash of nickel on the inner surface. The inner surface had
been given a coating of paint.
Coating thicknesses on the outer surface were as follows:
               Maximum Minimum Average range
 Copper 0.0027 in. 0.0012 in. 0.0012 - 0.0017 in.
 Nickel 0.0023 in. 0.0011 in. 0.0012 - 0.0021 in.
 Chromium 0.000l5 in. 0.00010 in. 0.00010 - 0.00013 in."

Just as Chuck suggests, even thicker than the '69.

Maybe Chuck can explain why the button plating system is different from the
handle one. Presumably something to do with wear characteristics?
