The old harnesses I've seen always have at least some decent sections. I reconditioned my harness by soldering in segments from donor harnesses where appropriate and shrink-tubing the soldered connections. This way, I keep the integrity of the original connectors. If you want to make your own harness, you'll need the industrial $300 crimping tool that makes an air-tight connection.
