Scott, I agree with what you say about the "E" versions. During the 1960s I can definitely remeber seeing deluxe or full-trim 1500 notchbacks and 1500 Variants with the "E" symbol in place of the "S". I can remember checking these out and finding that they were equipped as per the "1500S" but with only the single carb engine. I saw these in Zambia during the late1960s and then in Europe during the 1970s. Thus, they were German-made. (No Australian-made full-trim single-carb Type3 notchbacks ever had the "E" symbol. They had a "de Luxe" script on the back instead. And the squarebacks didn't get the full-trim treatment. And, I don't remember South African-made Type3s ever being available as an "E" model.) However, regarding the notion that an "E" model (i.e. Option M3 single carb motor in place of twin carb motor) may have been ordered instead of the "S" model to accommodate low octane fuel, this would not normally have been the case in sophisticated Singapore in the 1960s. And, if a customer was concerned about low octane fuel they could have had VW Option M240 for the twin-carb motor with a loss of only 2hp. Simon Glen Toowoomba, Australia.
