The point is that when you pump the pedal up and down, the seals in the MC act like check valves. They force fluid from the MC to the wheels on the downstroke, but on the upstroke the resistance to return flow is enough that it is much easier for fluid to refill the MC from the reservoir than to return from the wheels. Thus, there will be SOME return flow, but very little. My guess is less than 10%. Yes, I used to do it by the book, but that takes a LONG time, and eventually I discovered, by watching the movement of the fluid in the hose, that the return flow is very small compared to the outward flow. And, yes, isn't it amazing how AWFUL the fluid looks in even a medium aged car. Get rid of that DoT-3 and DoT-4 brake fluid and step up to silicone DoT-5. Once you get that installed in a nice clean system you'll never go back. It's wonderful stuff. I have a silicone brake fluid FAQ for those who are interested.
