I was also under the impression that the J indicated the safety rim, but I seem to recall a thread a year or so ago that said otherwise. You can EASILY confirm this safety feature with the wheel and tire in place. Just feel the rim from the axle side; if it has the safety hump on the "inside" you will feel a depression on the "outside." The difference is very distinctive.
