Yours is a common problem, and if you're lucky someone in your
area will be able to recommend a good place to do the work.

I find that body shop work takes a lot of room and specialized
equopment that most of us will never have, but engine work can be
done in a garage or a basement.

What it boils down to is the fact that no one cares as much about
your car as you do. If you are at all inclined to do your own work,
this is quite possible, although it pretty much requires that you
have alternate transportation. If you are willing to study up, buy
some tools, and work on this for a few months, there is plenty of
advice available here on this list to see you thru a rebuild.

OTOH, a lot of rebuilds are done when the problem is really much
simpler, so you may want to discuss your symptoms here before
you commit to a much bigger job.
