The stock system has enough power to run the stereo while you're driving as long as its not so loud that you can't talk to your passengers. While the peak draw into some systems can be quite high, the average is generally not. Probably the worst situation is parking somewhere with the volume turned way up with the engine just idling. At idle, the stock generator puts out little or no charging current. In this case you're pretty much just running off the battery.
