Re: [T3] SOLVED! Hard Starting (6V) (kinda long)

OK....maybe some progress. Got home form work tonight and tried the Square.
The starter would not spin with the key. I also did not hear any clicks from
the back of the car.

With the iginition switch on, I reached under and jumped the start. Starter
turned the engine over. I gave the throttle one pump, jumped it again and it
fired. Another pump and jump it again and she started. After about a minute
she was idling fine. I checked the generator output. 7V at idle, nearly 8V
at medium rpm. Let her idle for 10 minutes or so. Good throttle response.
Shut her down.

Tried switch...nothing. Observed that the idiot lights did not dim when
trying to start with the switch. Time to break out the VOM.

With the KEY OFF:
  Battery Voltage (BV): 6.2V
Ignition Switch (IS) Terminal 30: 6.2V
  IS Terminal 15/54: 0.0V
  IS Terminal 50: 0.0V
  Coil (+) Side: 0.0V
Starter Solenoid (SS) Terminal 50: 0.0V

This is all as it should be.

With the KEY ON:
  BV: 6.1V
  IS30 5.8V
  IS15/54: 5.8V
  IS50: 0.0V
  Coil: 5.3V
  SS: 0.0V

Still not too bad.....a small voltage drop due to gages and such I suspect.

With KEY START:
  BV: 6.1V
  IS30 5.8V
  IS15/54: 5.7V
  IS50: 5.7V
  Coil: 5.3V
  SS: 0.0V !!!!!!!!!

I suspected that the wire from the switch to the solenoid was bad. Unplugged
the wire from the solenoid and checked the continuity from IS50 to the end of
the wire. Had continuity!!!!!! Now what? Plug the wire back onto the
solenoid (taking the Ford solenoid out of the loop) and tried the switch.
She fired right up!!!!!!! What?????? Shut her off and tried
again....nothing this time!!!! Put the VOM on IS50 to check and tried her.
Started right up!!!! Shut her down and tried again without the VOM and
nothing!!! Put the VOM back on and realized that as I did I pushed on the
solder button for IS50 and it moved the little Bakelite board that the
terminals were on a bit. HMMMM?????? I very lightly touched the VOM to IS50
and tried it....nothing. While holding the key in START, I gave a little
push on the IS50 solder botton, moving the Bakelite board, and she fired
right up!!!!!! I was able to repeat this several times.

Looks like I have a bad connection inside the switch!! I believe I have
finally isolated the problem. Now what to do? Can the switch be repaired or
am I on the hunt for the early Ignition Switch? I suppose I could also wire
in a remote starter switch. This isn't a concourse restoration after all.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
