Maybe the ether just allows it to start faster before you run out of cranking power. Once it's started it'll run on the generator, no battery required until you need to start again. When I had the same symptoms I also had a brand new fully charged battery and a Ford relay wired inline to the starter. Would crank for a short amount of time and then die. I wouldn't suspect the ignition switch until you're sure you've ruled everything else out.
