Think I may take your advice there Jim.
I had a complete power failure in the camper the other day - main battery
cable had broken at the terminal on the starter.  Completely unexpected -
only 200 yards short of school and in a quiet road, so not a big problem,
but doesn't it make you feel powerless (in both senses!).
Luckily the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) mechanic who came to assist was a
former pupil of mine, has a VW camper, knew the PO of mine and that I had a
Variant too, and sorted it out, even re-soldering the new terminal. That's
service for you.

Rather him than me under there, as the night before we drove through some
spilled farm slurry and it hadn't lost its smell much.    :-(
