Get some oil on the clean surface RIGHT  AWAY or it will 
rust again very quickly. Once it's filled with gas it will be fine, 
as long as you keep the water out of it.

It is a brass screen and it would be good to have. See if 
your VW dealer can get you one; the Beetles used the exact 
same part, so it should not be hard to get. You also need a 
pair of gaskets for it.
