I suspect that you misunderstood the recommendation that you 
were given. What you might want to try is to set the timing so that 
the maximum advance (at high RPM) is 30 deg BTDC. Once you 
have done this you can see what the idle timing is and just set it 
there, at idle, in the future. 

Setting it to 30 deg BTDC at idle will give way you too much 
advance at speed. While this may seem good, this much advance 
will be very hard on your engine. While extreme amounts of 
advance often seem to perform well, This is SO much that I'm 
surprised that this runs as well as you say. 

Fix this right away as this can be really hard on your engine.
