Yes, you have a shift lever like a manual trans, but it does not have to be
shifted unless you want to. The shift lever has a switch built into it, that
accuates the servo for the clutch. When you take your hand off the shift
lever, the clutch engages, but the torque converter then starts to do it's
thing, and lets you hold the brake, and the car will sit still. As you
release the brake, the car will start to move as the engine RPM's come up
with throttle.

No, you do not have to shift the autostick to drive it. It can be started
out in any gear. The torque converter slippage takes care of getting
underway. Most people drove them by putting them in 2nd gear for around
town, and then shifting to 3rd for on the highway. If you are on a steep
hill, I would recommend shifting down into 1st, then as you crest the hill,
go into 2nd or 3rd.

The Autostick trans has the same gears as a manual trans, EXCEPT that there
is no first gear. It is a 3 speed trans, with a small servo accuated clutch,
and a torque converter, and a different transmission case.

NONE           == 1st manual trans
1st autostick == 2nd manual trans
2nd autostick == 3rd manual trans
3rd autostick == 4th manual trans
