This makes me think about loose or deteriorating load bearings -- transaxle or engine mounts, suspension mount rubbers, like that -- that could allow a piece of the drive train to touch something it shouldn't under certain circumstances. You haven't said whether this sound stays in time with engine, transaxle or wheel revolutions, or whether it comes at a constant frequency. What's your feeling on the direction it's coming from -- front, rear, left, right?
