The rear main had gotten so hot the the end play shims were BLUE It sounds like you got some good advice, but I would add the following: A seal will burn in only a few seconds if it is installed dry. All these parts need to be installed with some lubrication so that they can survive until the oil reaches them after the first startup. If this happened after the first startup I would wonder whether there was some problem that kept the oil from EVER reaching these parts. Even oil heavily diluted with gas will keep parts from overheating, even though it may not be a great lubricant.
