First of all I would like to thank everyone, you have been so helpful!! This list is the greatest thing next to Hilter and Porsche's decision to buld the first volkswagen. Originally the whole rotating assembly was balanced but when I replaced the crankshaft with a scat counterweighted because I thought the first one was bent, I had ran low on funds after having 2 align boring jobs, buying another case, new crank, and paying someone that I thought I trusted and how was experienced in performance air cooled engine to fix the problem. Therefore due to lack of proper funds I cheeped out and didn't get the engine balanced the last time. Today, I carried the engine to a older man who has worked on volkswagens his whole life. This guy had worked at dealerships in the later '50's till the early '70's. He loved the type III vw's back then but hated the fuel Injection, which he said often gave problems before the car was even one year old. Here is what the found. 1. The main seal had gotten hot and basically melted 2. The rear main had gotten so hot the the end play shims were BLUE 3. He set the the flywheel up on a jig and determined that it had no run out and that nothing was wrong with it. 4. We put everything back together and determined that the end play had been set waay too loose, around 8 thousandths 5. I pulled on the crank pulley as he felt of the main bearing and we determined that the main bearing had no movement at all. 6. There were some burrs on the flywheel that we removed 7. Oil was full of gasoline, determined to be caused by the 36mm dual dcnf webers acting up again 8. the gas in the oil could have been what melted my main seal and kept causing the engine to seize up all those times due to lack of proper oiling, that's what he thinks. 9. he installed a main seal set my end play around 4 thousandths and I used his massive torque wrench to put the flywheel back on. 10. I Paid him only $20.00 for the main seal, having him measure the end play, check the flywheel for run out, setting the end play correctly, installing the new main seal, 1 diet coke, about three hours of his time, loads of knowledge, stories, and information. I came back home took off my dual webers, put on a set of vw solex carbs that were perfect and like new. I have had them in storage for nearly 4 years now. I put the engine back into the car, changed the oil to get the gas/oil mix out of the engine. Primed the carbs, and she fired up on the first hit. Only problem is now that when I pump the accelerator pump on the left carb it sprays gasoline out around the accelerator pump. I think that the carbs sat up so long that the gasket became hard and cracked. I might as well install kits in both carbs because if one is doing it, the other will sooner or later. Anyone know if kits are still avaible for both of these carbs? Anyone have any advice on installing the kits for the factory carbs, or how to set them up and sync them up properly? I must get the car off of my mothers carport in 10 days, have it road worthy enough to drive back and forth to work and college or she says that It has to go. All help, suggestions, and or comments will be appreciated greatly.
