I spent some more time with my new girl this weekend. I am really glad that I pulled the engine to check for other critter nests and such. When I pulled the cooling tin off, the left bank of cylinders had lots of accumulated dirt and bits blocking a large precentage of the coolng fins...espcially under the oil cooler. The right bank had a large mouse nest built on top of them. I am sure that more than 90% of the cooling air flow would have been blocked by this nest. I doubt that the engine would have lasted very long with these blockages in there. I also discovered that neither carb was tightened down properly and that neither had a gasket between the mainfold and the head! There is supposed to be one, right??? I am not familiar with single port heads and dual carbs. I also found one more significant area of rust. The battery tray is completely rusted out. It had been "repaired" with a piece of wooden panelling!!! The hole is only the size of the battery and the surrounding metal is solid. Shouldn't be big deal to weld in a new piece. No other surprises yet. Now I just need to borrow an impact wrench to get the gland nut off so that I can install a new main seal as long as I have the engine out. Can't get the sucker loose with just my weight and a breaker bar. I keep just twisting the engine off of the bench.
