Oil coolers are quite common on w/c performance cars, but more often take the form of a sandwich plate fitted under the spin-on oil filter, and are plumbed into the water circuit for the heater (as on a Golf 2 GTI). This helps by using the oil to heat the water for a faster warm-up, and the once the engine is warm the cooling works the other way.
