Thanks, Brian. I suppose about 1 in 6 Type 3 enthusiasts are dark-siders, so I reckon you're doing as well anyway. The counter was quite a revelation. At the VW show at Stanford Hall yesterday, I met some of my cyber-VW pals, including a very grateful owner of a 6V Beetle who had used the starter-motor site to help him overhaul his. Puts the human back into "human race". Then guess what happened when I stopped for fuel on the way back. Not a peep from my starter-motor! It's the deep-heat bug that's attacked again after a 3-year respite. It's working now after a touch of the lead directly on the battery + (cleaner than crawling underneath!), but I wonder whether to pull the starter motor and clean/lubricate again, or to fit a relay, or just clean the battery posts. I guess the relay might be the best improvement as it will ease the load on the starter switch contacts too, and put off the day that needs changing. Dave.
