After 2 days of laying on my back under my '71 FB, it runs again. I was having problems with the Automatic transmission not shifting quite right. Since the fluid had not been changed since '79 when the trans was last rebuilt, I figured that is where I would start. The trans was bone dry, and therefore, the bolts were rusty. I twisted off 2 of them taking the pan off. Spent the rest of the day drilling them out, laying on my back, with tranny fluid dripping on me. Finally got the pan back on, and decided to install the tailpipe tip that I got off of Jim last summer. Needless to say, the bolt attaching it to the muffler broke off. Now I had to drill that one out. Then I noticed that the welded bracket on the muffler was loose on one end, and had to weld that back on. Next, I found that the tip was tight against the bottom of the bumper overrider. Had to heat the mounting bracket and bend it away. While under the car, I decided to adjust the valves. They were loose, which is a good sign. The valve cover gaskets I got from my local parts store suck so I will have to find some OEM type, and replace them at a later date. So, after 2 days, The trans fluid and filter is changed, the engine oil is changed, the exhaust is fixed, the dwell and timing are set, and the valves are adjusted. Took it for a road test, and it runs great, shifts great, and no exhaust fumes getting into the car.
