Re: [T3] T3 Aussie doors - reinforced driver's side?

Dave,

Yes, 1973 Australian assembled Type 3s do have what they call "side intrusion
bars" fitted to the doors. Motor vehicles sold here have to comply with ADRs
or Australian design Rules and these rules are published by the Federal
Transport Dept from time to time on an ad hoc basis. They started in the
early seventies and tended to follow those set down by the USA and especially
California when it comes to exhaust emissions. Thus, for example, from March
1971 all cars had to have head restraints for the front seats (ADR24) and in
March 1972 all cars had to have a range of passive safety measures
incorporated in the vehicle structure like intrusion bars in the doors
(ADR26). Therefore, even later 1972 models had these intrusion bars.
Whether these bars are the same as the American ones, I do not know.
However, while it is likely that US-spec Type 3s had their bars built in at
the factory in Wolfsburg, early versions of the Australian intrusion bars
could have been fairly simple attempts at complying with the new regulations
and so might have been different from the later (i.e. 1973 model) doors
supplied with the CKD kits from Germany to the assembly plant in Melbourne.
