It was originally the NSU K70, junior sibling of the NSU Ro80, which did have a rotary. It was the first watercooled product with a VW badge. Too bad the Ro80 was such a failure, it was a really interesting car. If it had been more reliable it might very well have led to a rotary VW, but probably not a rotary 411.
