I wouldn't stick my neck out and say they didn't. 'Fastback' is sometimes used for a sloping rear coupe; Rover used it on one of their 80s models I think. With Type 4s (411 and 412) it refers to the sedans, which have something of a sloping rear, but they're not in the same class as the elegant Type 3. VW have never badged a Type 3 as Fastback, Notchback or Squareback, though they do use it in literature. The only name that I have seen them labelled with is 'Variant', and that wasn't used in the USA. It's the reason why some people (ignorantly) talk about a "Variant Fastback" in the UK. Dave.
