Yes. The very first wankel powered car was NOT an NSU like many people claim to
be. The very first was the Mazda Cosmo 110S launched in 1966, beating NSU by a
few months. The Cosmo 110S was, in a way, a competitor to the Type3 Karmann

But back to the original question: No, VW has never had any car powered by
Wankel. They had the NSU RO80, but it wasnt badged as a VW. The 411 and 412
(facelift) had a 1.7 or 1.8 boxer 4-cyl engine.

The LE designation is common in Europe; only US option was LE's and thus not
marked as such nor anything else (E, L).
