The red/clear was typically used on the 60's cars. The amber ones were used
on 71-up cars. They are for different use.

The red/clear is a parking light. When you park along a street and only need
parking light on the outer side of the car (nearest traffic) you just flip
the turn signal lever to light the small red/clear light instead of the 4
regular lights in the head lights and tail lights.

The amber unit is just simply connected to the turn signals, blinking in sync
with the units f&r.

Now, there is a special difference on later cars. On my 73, I still have the
one-side parking lights. Not in the little side marker light, just the
regular front and rear ligths. Flip the turn signal lever to left, and the
left front and left rear parking light will light up. Flip the switch to the
right, and the right front and right rear lights will be lit. This is very
typical on German cars (especially german spec cars), my 1992 Audi has the
same feature. It was imported from Germany in 98. Me mom's 94 Vento (aka
Jetta) does not have this feature, it was sold new here in Norway.
