Has oil leaked or is it leaking from the valve covers. Oil penitration into the heat exchanger will cause a smell/smoke. Is the end of the exchangers where they meet #1 tight? Is your oil pump possibly leaking onto the lower part of your fan housing causing it to be picked up and blown into the fresh air then onto the hot exchangers.
