Hello, I have a quick question about the defrost on my '64 Notch. The
car is missing quite a few parts, among them whatever system there is for
turning the defrost on and off. How is the on/off set up on a '64? Is
there supposed to be a sliding block off plate for the front heat outlets?
Also, I've been receiving the list for a little while now but haven't
written, so let me introduce myself.
My name is Mike Tunaitis and I live in North Alabama. I've been an
aircooled enthusiast since I got my first car, a '65 Corvair convertible.
That was a really cool car, but like any other sane aircooled enthusiast I
made a quick transition to VW.
My first VW was a beautiful 1973 Campmobile w/ a Type IV 1700 engine. I
was hooked right there. Since then I've owned many VW's (enough to where
everytime I count I leave out a couple!).
The Type III was not always my aim (I wanted my horsetrading to land me a
sliding rag oval), but in the course of owning 7 different Type III's they
have become my favorite. My current project is a complete pan-off resto/mild
custom of a 1964 1500s Notchback sunroof. This is my favorite VW I've owned
yet! So much so that my New Beetle has surrendered it's garage space to
accomodate the project!
I look forward to the help the list can provide! I've got a ton of
questions about my project, such as parts sources and restoration tips and
techniques. Ironically, I work at a local auto parts store that doesn't
deal much with anything VW so I end up shopping elsewhere! I guess it's hard
for chain auto stores to think outside the box (not everybody owns, or even
wants, a V8!). I guess looking up parts for W-body GM junk all day just
reaffirms my appreciation for quality and thoughtful engineering.
So, here's to the Type III...
