You could probably do this, but I think it would weaken the seat 
significantly. If you have one of the early 72s with seats that slide 
on 2 rails, you would be better off just finding some early seats and 
installing them.

You also need to consider what your insurance company would think 
about your removing legitimate safety equipment from your car. Keep 
in mind that the hi-back seats were installed there for a reason.
