VW announced later that all their cars were OK - lead memory in the older
cars would protect the seats.  I guess the contamination of the surface with
lead does make it hard for a micro-weld to take.  It is recognised that a
slight increase in the rate of wear of the guides occurs, but considering
the relatively low careful usage the very old ones get, they probably do
know best!

It was quite an achievement to get 100,000 km (60K miles) even out of a VW
engine in the '50s without any engine work, so much so they issued
certificates.
