The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs carried out a number of tests, mainly using an Austin 1800 "Landcrab". This is a pretty crappy car, but uses the same motor as an MGB, and with the normal soft valve seats the head was ruined in a matter of a few thousand miles. To be honest, there really weren't that many "decades" before lead started to be added, and the cars in those days had lower compression, lower head temps, and people didn't expect to get 100,000 miles out of them without a set of rings and a valve job. OTOH you're right that this discussion is largely irrelevant as far as VWs go, although VW only state that cars built after the '70s can use unleaded all the time. They're probably just being cautious, as apparently the Germans have been happily bombing up and down Autobahns in their ACVWs on UL without much trouble. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
