> I went to the wrecking yard last week and pulled a set of rear 3-point belts (for the Golf), > and found all the mounting bolts are M11! We've discussed the seat-belt mountings before, and established they are actually 7/16" threads. The bolts currently used have 17mm heads but are not actually metric thread at all. Belts originally fitted here in the '70s had a slightly bigger head than the 17mm; I'm guessing they could be the normal AF measurement for the 7/16" bolts, but they may be specially large headed ones. Very early Type 3s had M24 threads in the mounting points and took an M24 male to 7/16" female adapter. The water-cooled mounting bolts are the same 7/16" thread as the belt mountings have always been (apart from the M24 ones). BTW, you've attributed the question about "why M7" to me, but that was actually me replying to the question. - no problem. Dave.
