The Bentley says only put them on the left... it only makes > perfect sense...? > Yes, 4 in the left half, and the 5th goes into the right for the 2 piece bearing. > 2. Trivia: What is the significance of the elephant stamped into the > original rod bearings, right next to the "VW" symbol? > It is the manufacturers/vendors logo. VW does not make their own bearings. > 3. one half of one of the cam bearings (fromt, rear, cant remember) is > flanged.(both the original and the new ones) does it matter which side this > goes on? > I should go on the left hand side of the case, the same as the 4 dowl pins. > 4. The Bentley says to heat the crankshaft gears to 176 deg. F to install > them, this would burn my fingers, no? any tips, suggestions? Or do they go > on very easily at this temperature? > I usually take them to about 200-250 degrees. Easiest way for the home do it yourselfer is to put them in the oven. Go the extra because they will cool off on the way to the garage. Use a barbeque mitt to handle them. When I was running my own shop, I used and old deep frier and vegetable oil to heat them. Smelled like McDonalds when I got done. :=] > 5. I got the rebuilt crankshaft in a box labeled GEX. I know you don't > think highly of them, but what could they do wrong on a crankshaft? > Check the radius's in the corners of the journals. If you have a micrometer, check the dimensions yourself. When instlling the rod's, check the side clearances. There should be some side play in the rods, after they are torqued. I am not sure waht the spec is off the top of my head. After the crank is in the case, make sure that it turns free. > 6. I had case savers installed: what torque should the studs go into the > case savers? Just the 23 ft lb that the heads apply, a little more? > Just screw them in all the way. (full thread) There is no torque spec on these.
