If you are mechanically inclined, and have a garage, you could do it yourself. With the help of people here on the list, I am sure we could talk you through it. Ther is also the chance that the low compression is caused by bad valves. In this case, if the rest of the engine is OK, just do a valve job on the engine for now, and figure on doing the rest of the engine at a later date. the problem here, is that if you get the engine out and after tearing it down, you find other problems, then you are between a rock and a hard place and have to do the whole thing. Flat rate time to rebuild a type-3 engine is about 20-22 hours. I woudl guess, that with new pistons and cylinders, and new valves and bearings, parts would come to about $500.
