The problem with the car was that VW and Karmann engineers was not able to make the body rigid enough to satisfy their safety levels. Does anyone know how they stiffened up the chassis -On the 68/69 fastback that I have taken the roof off of I used 75x25x2mm box sections which I Mig welded in the door openings. They run from wheel arch to wheelarch inside the car. All of the standard seats etc. fitted OK after welding the stiffeners in . I have not driven the car yet but it is clearly visible from jacking etc. that the whole chassis is much stiffer.
