I'd recommend that you just take a good look at how it all works together.
Use a strobe with an advance dial to determine the actual advance range of
the distributor on the car and whether it's stable and reliable. I'd want to
be sure that the dead retard side wasn't causing some sort of weird curve,
allowing over-advance or something. As a rule of thumb you'll want a little
advance at idle and around 30 degrees full out, a bit more at higher
altitude. Your best timing depends on your fuel rate, so first be sure your
carbs are synced right  (are they stock or ?) and your valves are adjusted
right. The left mark on the pulley was 5 after in '72-'73, 0 otherwise.
